Chapter Thirteen

The shopping experience was a lot less painful than she expected it to be. Devil was quick and concise, telling her what looked good and what didn’t. He even managed not to dress her like a barfly. Since its wintertime, she put her foot down when it came to wearing a dress. She ended up with a nice pair of skintight jeans, a pair of flat heeled boots, and a red blouse with a slight sparkle to it. It dips in the back and in the front but still covers her important bits. Amazingly enough, she was happy with how she looked in it.

Hank let her out of work early, saying that he had to go out of town for the weekend. They had a chat about him trying to schedule things during the workweek, so she has some semblance of an idea on his whereabouts. He’s had her pouring over cases all week, some she even figured a few new things about, and some she put aside until she can get more information on them. He hasn’t mentioned anything else about the serial killer case, but she did give him the information that her grandfather provided.

The next task on the agenda is to call her parents and cancel dinner. She’s fully aware that her mother’s gonna pull out all the stops, not that anything she says will change Sora’s mind. As much she loves her parents, she doesn’t want to have dinner with them tonight, maybe not any night for an undetermined amount of time. As an adult, she has the right to say no. It’s time for her parents to understand that.

She dials their home number and waits for them to pick up. Knowing that whatever her mom says, it won’t be a warm hello.

Her mother doesn’t disappoint her. “You’re already ten minutes late.”

“I’m not coming, Mom. I have other plans.” Her mom’s gasp of shock is so loud it echoes on her phone.

“We always have dinner every Friday. It’s the only thing that I have to look forward to–”

“Mom, don’t even bother. We both know that’s not the case. I’m sorry, I have other plans. I love you and Dad… I’ll talk to you later.” She says it in a rush hoping to get it all out before her mother blows her top. When her mother starts yelling, almost incoherently, Sora hits the end call button. As a precaution, she turns her phone on vibrate; this way, it’s not ringing off the hook all night. Her mother will be calling a lot.

With that unpleasant task completed, it’s time for her to get ready. The club doesn’t open until eight, so she has three hours. She’s going to need every single one of them. Other than the basics, she hasn’t put on full makeup in years. Not that she was ever any good with it. Devil was always the one helping her as a teenager, and when she did do it herself, it was with the assistance of tutorials online.
